The term “metaverse” was invented by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 science fiction novel, Snow Crash. The novel describes the metaverse as a massive computer-generated digital reality built on top of the real world so that humans can interact with each other via avatars. The concept has been extensively explored in other works of science fiction, including prepared participant One.
